Care and Maintenance
At Rikih, we work with handmade natural materials. Each piece is unique and, with simple care, will accompany you for many years, preserving all its beauty. Expand each material to see its care instructions.
Natural fibers (rattan, seagrass, water hyacinth, bamboo, jute, raffia, abaca)
- For indoor use or covered outdoor areas protected from rain.
- Dust regularly with a soft brush; for woven areas, a soft-bristled brush will reach the crevices better.
- Spot clean with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap; dry immediately and allow to air out completely.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heat sources, which can dry out and fade the fiber.
- Do not soak the piece or leave it in very humid environments: excessive humidity promotes mold.
Wood (teak, mango, acacia, and natural wood)
- Clean with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth; avoid abrasive products or those containing solvents.
- Use coasters and placemats to protect the surface from heat and moisture.
- Occasionally nourish the wood with specific oil or wax to enhance the grain and protect it.
- Teak is more weather-resistant, but benefits from periodic oiling if used outdoors.
- Immediately wipe up any spilled liquids and avoid constant direct sunlight.
Textiles (cotton, linen, velvet, wool, and leather)
- Cotton and linen: hand wash with cold or warm water, no bleach; iron at medium temperature and air dry.
- Velvet: brush in the direction of the pile or vacuum with a soft nozzle; absorb spills immediately without rubbing.
- Leather and wool: shake and air frequently; dry clean for spot cleaning. Avoid humidity and prolonged direct sunlight.
- These are indoor pieces; they are not weather-resistant.
Ceramics, stoneware, terracotta, marble, and glass
- Wash with warm water and mild soap; dry completely after each use.
- Avoid abrupt temperature changes (thermal shock) and abrasive scourers.
- Marble and stone: use pH-neutral cleaners, never acids; absorb spills quickly to prevent stains.
- Decorative terracotta: not suitable for outdoor freezing; dust with a soft cloth.
- Glass: handle with care and place on stable surfaces.
Metal (iron, brass, and stainless steel)
- Dust with a soft, dry cloth; spot clean with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately.
- Brass develops a natural patina over time, which is part of its charm.
- Keep pieces in dry environments and avoid prolonged contact with moisture to prevent oxidation.
- Stainless steel: clean following the polishing direction; avoid bleach and acids.
Shell, mother-of-pearl, and delicate pieces
- Dust very gently with a dry cloth; handle with care.
- Maintain stable indoor humidity and avoid contact with water and chemical products.
- Place them in a safe and stable location, away from impacts.
General tips
- Small variations in tone, texture, and grain are characteristic of natural and handmade materials: they are a sign of authenticity, not defects.
- Always protect your pieces from constant direct sunlight, heat, and excessive humidity.
